I have met some pretty cool people and heard some pretty cool stories. And I thought - the world should hear this! This is exciting - where will this story go? It will make a great podcast! |
Starting is the hardest part.
After a brilliant dialogue on history and world building by Six Sides of Gaming's Tomekeeper Devin Wilson, I said, "This is excellent podcast material!"
And he responded with "I'm free next Friday" - I found my simple start.
I had so much to learn; I had no idea. But I am good on-the-fly, and I come up with questions easily, so there is that. Devin was a consummate professional. Running a string of recorded games for celebrities must have further honed his skills. He seemed totally at ease, answered questions easily, directly, and almost never even said "um". He was also filled with excellent advice on following your dreams - taking steps to make sure they happen. His story is a testament to his advice, and I couldn't help but feel inspired by it.
I thought, gee, is this a writer trait? To have such wisdom and understanding of people and what makes us tick?
Planning and running games for people you've looked up to most of your life sounds like an amazing experience.
Further on, the comments about history, and how a single event can have an incredible impact on how events unfold. That's interesting itself. And clearly a great launching off point into world creation for a game. The sort of thing that helps create a deep understanding of factions, needs, desires, frictions - the history that shapes the world Devin is helping to create: the world of Imaria. I hope to follow up on that more in future episodes.
Something else interesting happened too. It's that, what started as a concept about D&D and roleplaying games had a bigger heart to it than just the nuts and bolts of the game itself. It had Devin, and other "real people," like him, passionate about what they do, possessing drive, creativity, wisdom, and unique perspectives. I realized that although I was making an RPG podcast, this was a human story and others would enjoy it too. And indeed they did.
As of now I've published six episodes and am excited to see where else this exploration will go!
Thanks Devin - for the great start!
